To our neighbours who support the proposed Queen’s Park Heritage Conservation Area

The HCA is not a ‘done deal’ – we need your support this Tuesday, June 13 at City Hall

While it may seem that the June 13th public hearing is a formality to confirm New Westminster’s first HCA in Queen’s Park – it’s not! We need a majority vote for the HCA from members of City Council to amend the Official Community Plan. We expect there will be some opposition at the Public Hearing and we need to balance this with evidence of wide support from the Queen’s Park neighbourhood. Please join us this Tuesday evening or call/click/write City Hall and let them know you support heritage conservation in Queen’s Park.

To tell your story to Council  register ahead of time by emailing clerks@newwestcity.ca anytime until 6 PM, June 13. While everyone is allotted 5 minutes – brevity will be appreciated as there will be many people who want to present! If you can’t make it, please take a few moments to contact Mayor Coté and City Council:

Protection of Queen’s Park’s historic character means there will be some trade-offs – but with the recently announced emphasis on addressing concerns of small homes/lot sizes – and some robust incentives that could be implemented – there is no downside to an HCA.  If City Council does not approve a Heritage Conservation Area, we will be back to the status quo – where no house (other than a few designated properties which have significant restrictions on what exterior alterations can be made) will be protected and there will be no design requirements for new builds. Under provincial law, the proposed layer of protection is only possible through an HCA.

If you support the proposed Queen’s Park Conservation Area, please attend the Public Hearing at City Hall this Tuesday, June 13th at 7 PM.  We need to turn out in large numbers to confirm that the majority of Queen’s Park residents want the proposed HCA.

Yours truly,
