The landmark 1894 Galbraith House was designed based on the plan by New York architect Henry Hudson Holly.

Building By The Book: New Westminster Houses from Architectural Pattern Books 1865-1940

Discover the story of how pattern books were used to design our most modest cottages and some elaborate landmark residences!

Many of New Westminster’s house builders chose to use the free plans offered by architectural pattern books designed by famous and not-so-famous American architects. Homes across the Royal City share this architectural pedigree, but their design stories have been well-hidden from the original homeowners.

Whether it was a stately Victorian mansion or a modest bungalow, a pattern book plan was usually the source of inspiration for a local home’s design. Architectural historian Jim Wolf will take us on a fascinating tour of the role of the pattern book in New Westminster’s architectural heritage.

How to attend via Zoom

Once again, this year’s AGM will be held virtually via Zoom. But as you recall, last year’s AGM and special presentation, Royal City Greetings: Vintage Postcards of New Westminster, made for a fascinating presentation on Zoom–with lots of opportunities for questions and comments.

NWHPS Members, please watch your inbox for a Zoom link, arriving Tuesday, February 22. Not a member? Everyone is welcome! If you need a link sent to you, email: Give me a ZOOM Link.

You don’t need a free Zoom account or app to join unless you plan on participating using a mobile device.

If you prefer, you can also dial in, using the phone number in the email.

If you’re new to Zoom, we suggest trying a test session at www.zoom.us/test before Thursday evening to check out your speakers and camera.

If in doubt, Google “how to join a Zoom meeting”!
