George Henderson House (1912)
See what New West Record reporter Theresa McManus thought of this unexpected fusion of heritage charm and eco-conscious innovation in the George Henderson House that boasts solar panels and a fossil fuel-free energy system, courtesy of homeowners and climate activists Agnes Black and Tim Takaro. Read the story.
In this home — an inspiring union of heritage house preservation and the integration of modern energy-saving technologies.
Built in 1912 by Charles Downer for developer George Henderson, this house is a perfect example of the Arts and Crafts style with shingle siding, a full-width porch and leaded-glass windows. George Henderson is also listed as building the adjacent house at 418 St. George Street.
Upon taking possession in 2005, the homeowners felt fortunate to inherit numerous tasteful improvements made by the previous owners, like the addition of a sunroom and powder room off the kitchen, the living room’s handsome built-in bookcases, fireplace and stained-glass windows, and the coffered ceiling in the dining room. Preserving most of the home’s historic paint colours further contribute to its timeless charm.
The inviting back porch was added in 2006. Upstairs, a refurbished family bathroom now boasts period-appropriate mosaic tile and cozy in-floor heating, complemented by a convenient additional sink.
Interestingly, an old photo shown to the homeowners revealed that the front porch and diamond pattern windows were not original to the house.
Most importantly, the homeowners are dedicated to transforming their home into a fossil fuel-free, solar-electric energy-powered residence. They have installed an electric heat pump for both heating and cooling, and their vehicle and new kitchen range are electric as well. Solar panels have graced the garage roof since 2016, with plans for additional installation on the house itself. Passive energy improvements include the addition of blown-in insulation and upgraded, energy-efficient windows. Single-glazed windows have been replaced with double-glazed units or fitted with custom storm windows for enhanced efficiency.
The George Henderson House was showcased in a documentary by Deni Loubert, a video journalist and documentary filmmaker at New West Community TV. The documentary highlighted three homes from this year’s tour, including the George Henderson House. This segment starts the presentation.
The owners’ dedication to preserving heritage charm while embracing modern energy-saving green technologies is celebrated in this cherished and beloved home.
