The present owners purchased the house in 2004, drawn to its many original features. The beautiful, beveled glass front door with sidelights, opening to a foyer lit up by original stained-glass windows over the landing, certainly makes for a dramatic first impression. The generous front porch is well-used by the family, and they have rebuilt the stairs, replacing the wrought iron railings with wood. The exterior has been repainted (formerly green, then yellow) and two patios were added to the side and rear.
An early priority in the interior was painting, as all the walls were green. The living room’s 10-foot coffered ceiling and all the woodwork was stripped of white paint and returned to the original wood trim. The light fixture here is original. Note the working gas corner fireplace with a “staircase” mantle. The wood floors are old growth, straight-grained Douglas fir.
The homeowners are in the process of replacing aluminum sliding windows with wood versions more in keeping with the character of the house. The new windows can be seen in the living room, dining room, kitchen and master bedroom.
The handsome kitchen was built by the previous owners using reclaimed wood for a period effect. They also added the French doors and rebuilt the rear porch and stairs. The door to the side is original and led out to a small stoop with stairs leading down to the yard.
Upstairs, the sole bathroom boasts its original iron tub with updated heated til flooring.
The basement has been fully finished with a family room, bedroom and two-piece bathroom.
Despite its age, the 113-year-old Jewhurst House is blossoming under the care of homeowners who appreciate it as a family haven while respecting and nurturing its heritage value.
