Mary Howison House (aka William Bartlett House)
226 Ninth Street • Pioneer tent-style, late Victoria period • Built 1893 • Builder: David Pearce
This 1893 Victorian cottage is named after the original owner, Mary Howison, a widow who commissioned carpenter David Price to build this house and its since-demolished twin next door, as income properties. Veternal tour goers may recall the homeowners' restoration of original wide-plank floors and mouldings; a front entry emerging from under 100 years of paint; and freshly responred walls (some minus 10 layers of wallpaper). This year ties it all together with a back-to-the-studs kitchen renovation that blends seamlessly with the rest of the 123 year-old home and a jew box of a main floor bathroom.
