Pacific Pre-Raphaelites: The Arts and Crafts Movement in British Columbia

- the movement and the architects who integrated inspired design and the intrinsic beauty of craft into everyday living

The Arts and Crafts movement in Greater Vancouver has left a rich legacy that is expressed in some of our most beautiful and valued buildings. Inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites of England and their leader William Morris, generations of young English architects were immersed in the ideology of ‘art for art’s sake’. Patrons commissioned these engaged designers to create sublime design features in architecture and design elements, incorporating true artistic craftsmanship in stone sculpture, woodwork, fireplace tiles, stained glass and wrought iron.     
 

NWHPS is delighted to welcome local historian and heritage preservation advocate (and past NWHPS president) Jim Wolf to talk about the movement and the architects who introduced the much loved Arts and Crafts style to the Pacific Coast. Grand mansions and modest cottages were graced with sublime

features such as stained glass, wood-carving and tile  that made living in these homes a pleasure for their occupants – then and now.

 
Jim Wolf is a well-known local historian and author. A long-time advocate of heritage preservation, Jim is a past president of the New Westminster Heritage Preservation Society and is director of the New Westminster Heritage Foundation. He lives in New Westminster’s Queen’s Park neighbourhood.
