A WW II Hero is Honoured Here
The 2025 Heritage Homes Tour shone a light on New Westminster’s role during the Second World War. Once a gathering place for young soldiers awaiting deployment, the city remembers those who once lived in our neighbourhoods.
The homes and landmarks on this year’s tour include memorial displays honouring nine local servicemen, including Victoria Cross recipients Lt. Col. Jack Mahony and Sgt. Ernest “Smokey” Smith.
These are their stories.
More on Private Mayo Grenville Barber
Born: February 8, 1920
Mayo Grenville Barber was mobilized for active service on January 1, 1941. The 2nd Battalion was stationed in the Prince Rupert area beginning July 1941. This strategic deployment was part of Canada’s broader home defense efforts in response to growing concerns over a possible Japanese invasion along the Pacific coast.
Private Barber’s unit was attached to the 13th Infantry Brigade, 6th Canadian Division, and was tasked with defending key West Coast positions. Although the 2nd Battalion would later be re-designated and eventually disbanded, their service was a vital part of Canada’s national defense during a time of real uncertainty and threat.
