Queen's Park Healthcare Volunteer Society donates $10K to enhance lives of long-term care residents
L–R: Doug Brun (Volunteer), Colleen McDonald (Executive Director), Jan Cook (Chair), and Ron Howe (Volunteer) present a cheque from the Queen's Park Healthcare Volunteer Society to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, June 2025.
A generous $10,000 donation from the Queen's Park Healthcare Volunteer Society (QPHVS) is the latest in a long tradition of community care and support for residents at Queen’s Park Care Centre and William Rudd House.
In a recent cheque presentation, committee members gathered to celebrate the gift, which will fund the purchase of 25 pocket talkers and 10 televisions with headphones. Pocket talkers help residents with hearing loss — especially those without hearing aids — engage more easily with staff and fellow residents. The new TVs will replace outdated models and provide access to those unable to afford their own.
“Being able to watch a familiar show or hear a loved one speaking to them makes a world of difference to someone in care,” said Colleen McDonald, Executive Director, QPHVS. “These kinds of supports ensure residents can stay connected, entertained, and engaged—essential elements of mental and emotional well-being in long-term care."
A longstanding commitment to resident well-being
In addition to this year’s gift, QPHVS has made numerous contributions in recent years, including:
- Christmas Giving Program (~$3,000 annually): Ensures that every resident receives a personal gift during the holidays, spreading warmth and inclusion
- 75-inch TV with surround sound for William Rudd House to support group viewing and entertainment
- Wi-Fi coverage at William Rudd House, funded monthly by QPHVS to ensure residents can stay connected to loved ones and the world around them
- Window coverings at William Rudd House ($6,851.04) to improve comfort, privacy, and infection control, which were part of an $11K donation that also included providing two specialty wheelchairs.
- Music room upgrades at Queen’s Park Care Centre ($5,139), including a colorful mural, upgraded sound system, projector for singalongs, and sensory-friendly drums and lighting to support dementia and mental health therapy
A partnership in purpose: Heritage New West
Heritage New West is proud to support the work of QPHVS by helping present the Society's signature fundraiser, Homes for the Holidays. This beloved annual event brings the community together to celebrate festive décor, heritage homes, and generous giving—while raising essential funds for long-term care needs.
